Editorial Reviews:

Ricardo Arjona's Adentro is the sound of a master at the peak of his pop-rock craft. Arjona has always been an emotive, expressive performer--using his considerable talent to shed light on social and political issues that affect both his Guatemalan homeland and Latino populations around the world. Adentro continues that trend, most notably on benchmark single "Mojado," which chronicles the plight of undocumented workers entering the United States. (The presence of Texas-bred supergroup Intocable adds to the song's emotional resonance, and it only seems to get timelier with age.) Elsewhere, Arjona tackles lessons in life and love ("Para Bien o Para Mal," "Acompaname a Estar Solo," "Ya No Me Acuerdo de Mi") with an equal sense of urgency. Anchoring every song--and all of Arjona’s work--is his commanding voice, which maintains the difficult balance between steely determination and world-weary sentiment. A fine set of songs from a formidable singer. --Joey Guerra

Customer Rating: Summary: His Magnum Opus Comment: I can't formulate a review worthy of this work of art because everything I want to say will be inevitably lost in translation... but let me try: A treasure chest full of gems, no fillers here, each song is beautifully written and recited in Arjona's poet-voice (the one we all love). Arjona understands the human experience well enough to succesfully conceal truths in the form of love stories. When facing truth our first response is to reject it because of its potential to crush us, but when concealed in the form of a poem we can handle it and our soul weeps of joy. Well this entire disk has that. Song #13 (not my favorite but definetely the magnum opus of the cd), Ya no me acuerdo de ti, he is speaking about Enlightenment. hahaha
Customer Rating: Summary: One of Arjona's Best Comment: This is one of the best albums of Arjona, the songs are very good. I love Mojado, with Intocable is a very profound theme but with a Banda twist very nice.
Customer Rating: Summary: Arjona on Cruise Control Comment: I wanted to like "Adentro". Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike this album, I just don't like it as much as I expected to. "Adentro" is no "Santo Pecado", not by a long shot. The intense passion of "Santo Pecado" (fueled in large part by the break-up of Arjona's marriage) is totally missing from his latest effort, replaced by a colorless emotional and musical exhaustion. Emotionally, the singer/songwriter holds himself and the listener at arm's length from any hint of real passion. (There is a lot of musical thrashing with an overuse of repetitive, over-orchestrated shrill choruses that some might mistake for passion, but the real article is nowhere to be found on this album.) The production is pop all the way, which doesn't really play to Arjona's strong suit, unlike the more idiosyncratic production on his earlier albums, especially "Sin Daños a Terceros" and "Santo Pecado". Lyrically, "Adentro" doesn't display the sharp, odd and totally devestating use of language that makes Arjona such a joy in Spanish. "Adentro" is neither a very good album nor a terribly bad one--it is simply average. The problem is, I can't bear to listen to the whole CD in one sitting, it is simply too uninteresting to hold my attention for 60+ minutes. How different from "Santo Pecado"--when I first got it I couldn't stop listening to it day and night, for weeks. If you want to experience Ricardo Arjona in all of his musical and poetic glory, start with "Santo Pecado", then listen to his earlier albums. After that, listen to "Adentro" and see how it measures up.
Customer Rating: Summary: Melodically opulent. Lyrically genius. A deliciously fulfilling work of art. Comment: Adentro is a punch to the heart - honest, intense, sensitive, emotional. Its beautiful and poetic lyrics are complimented with magnificent melodies, and further complimented with perfect orchestrations. Each song feels heartfelt - true. Ricardo Arjona's artistic integrity is evident throughout the album, which has an organic yet sophisticated feel.
Before Adentro, I had never bought an album by Arjona. I am now a fan.
Each song is a gem, but the gems among the gems are:
Para Bien o Para Mal - Listening to this song makes you feel like you are seeing your whole life in front of you, ready to move on - while you take some time to quickly scan the history of your love relationship for the last time. You feel the resignation and lack of hope regarding the past along with a huge and unavoidable melancholy. But you also feel the healing relief of getting out of something that was irreparable. The song ends with a relieved "For better or for worst - it's over". An undisputed masterpiece.
Pinginos en la Cama - Tori Amos or Nacho Cano (with Ana Torroja) could have easily written or sung the "piano version" of this song. The song has a very "Jackie's Strength" feel, but is completely original in melody and lyric. I cannot decide which version I like best. The more acoustic version is amazing with soubtle New Order-like guitars, mixed with other more Spanish guitars, as well as keyboards and ingenious stings. Bothe versions are great. Very true and "right-on" regarding what mature relationships sometimes go through, and the potentially devastating, irrational, and paranoid jealousy that can come between two individuals. I don't think this common issue has ever been expressed more eloquently or originally. Arjona just has such a way to write, that for example in this song, you feel the love, the anger, the tediousness, the longing, the irony ---- all at once. Amazing!
Mojado - A song with so much substance it will no doubt become a classic. I can see someone like Chavela Vargas or Juan Gabriel singing it in the future. The song's production and arrangement has just the right influence and blend of Tango, Flamenco, Tejano, and Pop. The melody is perfect. It's incredible!
Acompaname a Estar Solo - One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Deep, mature, hopeful, yet humble. So true to life and those times when we need to be introspective and take some time to be alone, in order to be able to face the future in a renewed and more positive way. The melody and arrangement are grandiose. Listen carefully and you will see that the song has an intricate pace that gives it an almost waltz-rock-pop feel.
Pa'Que - An outstanding melody with a piercingly sad lyric that effortlessly puts you in the shoes of a man who has lost his love. You instantly feel the longing and emptiness, and can almost feel the house and the world tumbling down on you, as if you were who the song was about. Heartbreaking. If you listen to the bare melody of the song (especially the chorus - not just the piano part), you will realize it is very much like a Chopin piece. Incredibly beautiful!
NOTE: Don't be put off if you are not into serious, slower songs. There are quite a few happy songs that rock in Adentro. I just love the more melancholic ones.
A brilliant album!
Customer Rating: Summary: Awsome CD for those Spanish Speakers who understand the profound words he writes Comment: I love this CD. Arjona knows how to write music that leaves you speechless and breathless. I highly recommend this CD. Great variety of rhythms included in the CD. I love his style, I got another one of his CD's and love it. Great artist/poet/and loco.
